... ... Greek Alternative bands: alternative rock

The IndieFunda Project

The indiefunda project is a collaboration of independent artists around the globe, who want to create a platform where an independent artist will be able to have financial aid directly from his/hers audience. Check it out!

May Roosevelt

Influenced by the very reverend trinity of Bach, Björk and Klaus Nomi, May Roosevelt is an extraordinary thereminist, composer and producer with a sense for good, old-fashioned drama. Her classical arrangements will give you the shivers (or, at the very least, remind you of movies that gave you the shivers), with nods to early industrial or electronic music and a passing resemblance to the god of thunder behind a theremin. Like many people, she got into music via her first Casio synth as a kid. If her knack for otherworldly sounds is anything to go by, that Casio must have been possessed by some very restless and musical ghosts.

2L8

2L8 is the project of K the Clown and a team of collaborators and musicians based in Thessaloniki, North Greece.

Berlin Brides

The Berlin Brides’ sound is a hybrid of electro, punk and powerpop. They were founded on September 2007 by Natasha Giannaraki, lyricist and lead singer and Marilena Orfanou, keybordist and composer who gives the band its electronic identity. Conceived in Berlin and formed in Greece, they are reinventing the music scene in Athens with their caustic lyrics and their combustible live performances.

Electric Litany

The story of the band started, when Alexandros and Richard met in London. Alexandros moved from Corfu to London, while Richard was leaving Devonshire for London in search of forming a band of his own. Duane was the last member to join the band, since he was found by Alex and Richard through an ad. Their first rehearsals were taking place in some pretty unusual places, like abandoned and derelict buildings.

New Zero God

New Zero God is a Greek punk/post punk rock band formed in 2006. Their popularity in Greece may be due to the veteran musicians who make up the band; as most Greek rock fans were already familiar with Mike Pougounas and Averkios Hadjiantoniadis from The Flowers Of Romance, which is considered a legendary Greek gothic rock group.

I saw fourtythree sunsets

Indie rock band from Athens. Formed in 2009 as an acoustic trio, playing covers from foreign indie bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Death Cab for Cutie, Arctic Monkeys, Beirut, Bon Iver, Empire of the sun, Queens of the stone age, Radiohead and many more but also writing their own acoustic songs.
In 2010, they were searching for new sound, more concrete and full, so they found two great artists for bass guitar and drums. At that point, they started recording their first promo EP with 5 songs.
Now a new era begins in 2011. Their first promo EP is ready after one year of recording and mixing and will soon be sold through MySpace,Facebook.
Fasten your seatbelts!
The future is unknown, but the trip has started.

Zebra Tracks

Their first release in early 2006 was the double A-side single (Silicone Valley/ Borealis Fallacia. The sales of the CD single (700 copies) and the number of tickets in the concerts were an unexpected success.

Zebra Tracks are picked up as opening act for Television Personalities and is appearing in the concert for the 4th European Social Forum on 6 May and on 22 June in the Music Day on Kotzia Square stage, one week after their participation in the Urban Fest Osijek in Croatia.

The fuzz around the band’s name was followed by interviews in Rock Magazines, Radio Stations and Mad TV’s "Post Alternative" show.

Meanwhile the song “Spare Time Soundtrack” is recorded at the Sonic Playground Studio and is included in the original soundtrack of the movie “Approaching of the hour”.

The next plan was the outer Athens scene. The decision to follow Film, one of the most important Greek bands of EMI, at their tour in Greece, led them to 10 northern cities in December 06.

In June 2007 the Zebra Tracks E.P. is released and distributed by Sonic Playground. It receives great critics, hits No1 in the indie record shop Vinyl Microstore and stays there for 3 months. It’s also voted 4th best Greek release of 2007, by the readers of the Velvet magazine.

The same time Placebo picks up Zebra Tracks as an opening act for their concert in Lycabetus Theatre, where Zebras play in front of 7000 fans. One month later Zebras play live with Kaiser Chiefs, Long Blondes and Good Shoes at the Open Air Festival.

During 2008 the band spends most of the time in studio recording the debut full-length album “A family picture from… Zebra Tracks”, which is finally released in October 2009 by Sonic Playground Records. Zebras play live with the Levellers at the opening of Fuzz Club before presenting the album in Athens on 31/10. Since then, they are touring around in various cities and working on new material.

Costas Spanos and Dimitris Steves played with Pougounas in his previous band, Nexus. While New Zero God is billed as a post-punk group, their sound may lack any true classification, as their current style is a culmination of a musical evolution that began with The Flowers Of Romances pure punk style, later gothic rock style, and then Nexus industrial style.

Interstellar Overdrive

The core of what was to become interstellar overdrive was formed around 1998 in Athens, Greece; since then little or no resemblance exists. The genre changes dramatically with every new project.

In 1999’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest (held in Athens) the band was awarded with the first prize leading to the realisation of the debut album (Pegasus Records, 2000), which was recorded from May 1999 to June 2000 at various times.

From April 2002 to January 2003 the band, with a different line up this time, records a second album titled ‘Surface b’ again for Pegasus Records. The genre is a lot different than the debut with influences ranging from indie to post-rock. Yet, within this album there is evidence of a more experimental and less commercial approach to music.

From May 2003 the band stabilizes its line up (Catherine Papahristou, Pepy Kosma, Alex Sakellariou, Orestis Karamanlis) and records a series of pieces for different occasions. Within Spring 2003 “A short piece for the poison–man” is ‘exhibited’ along with the homonymous painting of Stefanos Rokos. In July, ‘Pop+Rock’ Magazine hosts the same song in a collection. In March 2005, ‘Pop+Rock’ Magazine hosts ‘Happy Hour’ in a collection for the Greek English-spoken scene.

In November 2005 the band records a series of pieces for the painting/engraving exhibition of Stefanos Rokos in Athens at “Agathi Hall of Art”. The music was intended to accompany the catalogue of the exhibition titled “Noise and Useful Objects” and was reproduced in 1500 copies. It consists of a mixture of electroacoustic sound and songs divided in 9 parts. The album was recorded in Cambridge and Athens and mixed by George Priniotakis at ArtRacks studio. It was disposed free at the opening day of the exhibition.

In January 2009 the band’s 3rd official album - titled “Hibernation” - was released by Studio2 Records. This is by far the most elaborate work to the present day. It was produced in 3 countries (Greece, England and Ireland) within the span of 5 years. It has been co-produced at SARC, a research center on sonic art, implementing also new methods for musical expression and human-machine interaction.

The music of interstellar overdrive has also been used in film and theatre.

At the moment the band continues to undertake an even more experimental approach investigating alternative ways to produce music using new media (even though its members are scattered).

Gravitysays_i

The group gravitysays_i was created in the March of 2003 by Manos Paterakis and Nikos Retsos at the home studio of the latter in Piraeus with a view to embellishing with melodies their expectations, their lives, in a country which devours it’s children and the quality of being different, as the two creators perceive it. Their maiden appearance in the record industry, released by Sirius, comprises nine musical pieces, inspired by the egoism , the vanity and the aloofness of the contemporary man… A concept album of non-stop performance, where the electronic element meets the traditional instruments, while the minimal norms follow a general pop-rock current. Despina Stamati (voices) and Dimitris Chadjimitros (bass) have helped in the creation of “The roughest sea” and whose dynamic presence led to the accomplishment of debut album. At this moment gravitysays_i are working on new material with a new member

Vello Leaf

"Vello Leaf" is a dream pop band formed in December 1999 by Nikos Grivakis, Michalis Koulieris and Apostolis Lionoudakis in Chania, Greece. Their music is described by the female ethereal vocals, the sweet melancholic melodies and the dreamy atmosphere. They tend to combine their cinematic sound with several kinds of art, such as theatre, film or video art.

Having already recorded two self-released EPs and written music for several theatrical performances under the name "deep.insight", Vello Leaf made their break-through in December 2006, releasing their debut-EP "Morning Star" (featuring female vocals by Alexandra Mckay) which got praising reviews from the press and was later voted at the top-15 of 2007 in Greece by the readers of Avopolis & Sonik music magazine. Reception of the album was beyond expectations and songs from "Morning Star" were included in various compilations, such as Dimitris Papaspyropoulos' "Silent Wonder" (Sony-BMG), the soundtrack of the movie "Alter Ego" (Village Films), and "City Campers" (The Sound Of Everything).

Their first full length album .."Tonight, I'm Leaving...".. was released in December '09 - celebrating 10 years since the creation of the band. It contains 8 songs featuring Alexandra McKay and Evira (Abbie Gale) on vocals, and comes in deluxe packaging with a spectacular artwork by painter Kate Alizadeh.

Lumiere Brother

Lumiere Brother is the founding member of the alternative rock group Serpentine. During autumn of 2007, after the pause of musical activities as a Serpentine member, he recorded 13 new songs, with the productive and imaginary help of Ottomo from Fab Liquid Studios. These 13 songs were the start of a new period of musical creativity, under the cinematic influences of Lumiere Brothers’ films, Tim Burtons tales, the vocal harmonies of Beatles and E.L.O., the adventurous lives of Oscar Wilde and Saint Exypery and the fragile piano sounds of Satie and Debussy

DR.ATOMIK

DR.ATOMIK's second album "REPTILES" is now complete. It was produced and mixed by Antonis Livieratos at his home based hobART phASe STUDIO, Athens, GR. Release dates will soon be announced. Both vinyl and CD versions of the album will be available. DR.ATOMIK appeared for the first time in 2004. Four drummers, two bassists, a video artist and a violin player came and went before the band settled at their current quartet line-up. Antonis Livieratos (www.livieratos.gr) is the main songwriter of the team. He has been actively involved with the Greek rock and experimental scenes as a musician and producer for more than two decades. Besides his 3 solo albums he is a a founder member (since 1982) of the still active "Chapter 24" band. He has also been a member of the bands "Sigmatropic" and "Illegal Operation". Adonis Goulielmos credits include bands "Rockin' Bones", "Fella" and "Cosmic Teds". Vaios Zitonoulis was a member of Low Noise along with Yiannis Tryferoulis who, also, is or has been part of Sigmatropic, Swinging Tyranhas, Genia tou Chaous, Moist Device and more... DR.ATOMIK's live show used to consist of two musicians (handling guitars, a laptop and an organ) playing in front of the screen where the "moving pictures" (live video art created in real-time by band's third member) were projected. Now that a drummer and a bass player have been added to the line-up, the use of sequenced electronics and video are reduced to a minimum. But their unwillingness of reproducing their recordings on stage has remained unchanged. So, never expect two Dr.Atomik gigs to be exactly the same... DISCOGRAPHY Their debut album Dr.Atomik, (HitchHyke Music, 2007) was produced and recorded by Antonis Livieratos (at hobART phASe STUDIO, Athens, GR) and Mixed and Mastered by Paul Hamann (at SUMA, Painesville, OH, USA) RELATED WEBSITES www.dratomik.com (Greek and English) www.youtube.com/dratomikband www.livieratos.gr (Greek and English) www.myspace.com/kefalaio24 www.myspace.com/ommamusic

Abbie Gale

Abbie Gale are a five-piece band, that took shape during the summertime 2003 in Patras. They record their first album titled Family Life, that it circulates the summertime 2005 from Vacant Records. The album is characterized by its’ low profile, acoustic sound and the voice of Evira. It takes dithyrambic reviews from the printed and electronic press and the group intensifies their live appearances in many Greek cities.   They started to work their new songs on summertime 2006 and two years after the release of their acclaimed debut “Family Life”, Abbie Gale are back with their second album, symbolically titled “2”. The music style of the band changes perceptibly, the sound becomes more electric and the rhythm most intense, without losing the melody that characterizes them. Guided by the charming, wide-ranging voice of Evira, the band appear more mature than ever, as they present their compositions in a solid and determined fashion. The album’s excellent production values, combined with Abbie Gale’s confident playing, make “2” an exciting listening proposition.
Starting with the introspective mood of the opening track “Life After Life”, Abbie Gale guide us through a bright playful conversation in “Lovesong” (guest featuring Raining Pleasure’s frontman Vassilikos), sparks of lyricism such as “Clown” and “Air” and an agonizing spoken-word manifesto in “Danko”. The band’s dedication to their creative vision, along with their refined sense of songwriting and their honest inspiration make for an aesthetically flawless result.   Abbie Gale’s “2” is also the debut release of the new and upcoming indie label Inner Ear.
Abbie Gale are:
Evira: Voice
Salvatore: Guitar, bass VI
Pedal: Guitar, keyboards
Achilles: drums, loops
Nick: bass

Sigmatropic

Sigmatropic is one of the most influential and successful bands that came out of Greece in the last ten years. The band is the musical vehicle of founding member and main nucleus of the band, Akis Boyatzis.
AKIS BOYATZIS marked his musical presence in his native Greece for the first time in the early 80’s with local bands CAPTAIN NEFOS and LIBIDO BLUME. CAPTAIN NEFOS (a tongue in cheek moniker & loosely translated as “Captain Smog” as a tribute to the menacing & hovering Athens pollution cloud) were a clear cut and poppy New Wave outfit. Together with LIBIDO BLUME, AKIS BOYATZIS appeared on several singles and on a couple of albums, therefore making an early successful mark on the Greek music scene as an English-singing artist.
In the late Eighties Akis moved to the US Midwest & started a band called HUM along with three American musicians. Upon returning to Greece in 1990, after a short-lived reunion of Captain Nefos he founded the ephemeral DEKA METRA DENDRA (Ten Meter Trees) but with no official recording output.
After a period of playing as a session musician AKIS definitely abandoned the New Wave power punk persona and reemerged in 1997 as a new revolving outfit called SIGMATROPIC. Aptly named after a chemical reaction type, it soon blossomed from a single person home-studio project into an exciting full blown live band. Meshing breezy Mediterranean flavoured beats with ice-chilled Electronica SIGMATROPIC soon dished out some excellent material. Together with the wizardry of highly respected musician-producer Antonis Livieratos, SIGMATROPIC released a single “Air” & an album “Random Walk”, both on cool Greek indie label Hitch Hyke. In 1999 the EP “If You Were Me” helped to enhance their profile with a heavy airplay rotation.
The same year, Sigmatropic were invited to perform at the great Athens summer ROCKWAVE festival as a local band sharing the same stage with the likes of Blur, Prodigy, Patti Smith & Placebo. Despite a raised profile and critical success in Greece, AKIS BOYATZIS remains far removed from the overall music scene. As an elusive master technician he only emerges to occasional dazzle audiences with a live set.
In 2002 SIGMATROPIC released to an unsuspecting public the Greek original version of “Sixteen Haiku And Other Stories” which was based on the poetry of the late great Nobel laureate George Seferis. This album had the decisive production of Coti K and contained a sprawling musical & literary odyssey with outstanding results. The extensive praise underlined spellbinding soundtrack like music with the sophisticated vocalisation of the Haiku poetry.
The next instalment by SIGMATROPIC was the international version of 16 Haiku And Other Stories, produced by Antonis Livieratos and Akis Boyatzis. This project was the English version of the previously mentioned Greek-sung album featuring 18 guest vocalists from both sides of the Atlantic. An astonishing list of cult musicians graces this enhanced version, delivering their own vocal interpretation to an English translated poetry over the same music.
A tour followed in a number of Greek cities with guests like Carla Torgerson, Pinkie Maclure and James Sclavunos.
The next major step for the band and Akis especially was its participation in the production and songwriting of Carla Torgerson's first album "Saint Stranger". Carla with lyricist Michael Willet stayed in Akis' home in Athens for 3 months in the Spring of 2004, were most of the album was recorded and produced.  and finally released by Glitterhouse.
The same time the band was active performing live around Greece. Among others, they performed (second time in their career) in Rockwave festival (July 2005), in the International Day of Music (Athens, 2004 and 2006) and opened for Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds (Athens and Thessaloniki, December 2005).
The band has just finished working on their long anticipated new album "Dark Outside" to be released in September 2007 in Greece (Hitch Hyke) and the UK (Tonguemaster). A number of guests (Robert Fisher, Howe Gelb, James Sclavunos and Carla Torgerson) also contribute with their vocals in the album that was mixed by Ian Caple, the legendary engineer and producer of the Tindersticks, Tricky, Mansun, and Shriekback.

Misuse

Formed sometime in 2001 - Played several gigs in Athens at various venues, including support gig with Mogwai at Ark No.6 on April of 2003, after being selected by Mogwai themselves - Also played in other towns including Antiparos, Lehaina and Tripoli - Songs of Misuse are included in the now very hard to find compilations: “Mad Athens Presents Pop Scene 01” by Rubber, “Civil Cinder REgalia Vol. 1” by Tobruk Records & “In The Junkyard vol. 1” by Spinalonga - Misuse’s song “Progyria” has been choreographed by Nefeli Stamouli. The choreography has taken part in the World Choreography Contest In Varna, Bulgaria in August 2006 & has also been presented at HELEXPO International Exhbition in Thessaloniki in an event of the Hellenic Dance Company in association with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, in Aristotelous Square on September 2006.

After the release of yet another compilation that features Misuse, “In the Junkyard vol.3” by Spinalonga Records, Misuse released their awaited self-titled full length album in May 2008 through Puzzlemusik and Spinalonga Records getting critical acclaim in the local press and gaining new fans!

Sadly, on September the 18th 2006, Christos Kormalis, who was the original drummer and founding member of Misuse lost his life in a motorbike accident. Though he didn’t play with them for the last 5 months, he was, and is, always considered as member by the group. It is him playing on Misuse’s Locked in a bar He will be missed…

Bokomolech

Bokomolech is a band from Athens, Greece.

The members met sometime in 1991 in the National Technical University of Athens. They started making an impression on Indie audiences in 1993, after having played at the Indie Free Festival.

Their name comes from a Ukrainian physician, Alexander Alexandrovic Bogomoletz, who came up with a drug of the same name sometime in the 1950’s, supposedly postponing the aging of cells in the human body.

Their debut LP was “Xero” (1995 - Lazy Dog Records, an indie label from Salonica).
They later signed with Hitch-Hyke and released the E.P. “Insect (songs)”. Steve Albini was impressed by their music and invited them to Chicago to work on a record together at his own well-known studios “Electrical Audio”. The product of this collaboration was a double L.P., “Jet Lag”. Steve and Shellac fitted an extra day in their European tour that autumn, so that they could play in Athens with Bokomolech.
Their next release was another E.P., entitled “Slowburner” and produced by Greek musician/producer, Coti.K.
“Exit: Trance” is their latest record. It was recorded during the summer of 2003, once again with Steve Albini, but this time in Iain Burgess’ Black Box Studio in rural France. It was their first record that got properly distributed abroad, in Portugal and Germany.

Travel Mind Syndrome

Travel Mind Syndrome are a five piece alternative/indie rock band. Their music combines a wide range of elements, thus creating a unique, distinct musical style. The band is known for their energetic and upbeat live performances... From October 2007 to February 2009 Travel Mind Syndrome were London-based. During that time their first single, titled “Donna”, gained airplay at local radio stations such as BBC Scotland, BBC Liverpool and Island Fm. Also, Travel Mind Syndrome featured in the BBC 6 Music radio show “BBC Introducing” by Tom Robinson... Travel Mind Syndrome returned to Athens in 2009 and recorded their first EP titled “East Acton to Saint Friday”. The band has been gigging frequently in clubs, has supported various artists (e.g. the Caesars, Sivert Hoyem) and has participated in many festivals gaining positive reviews. Most reviews rave about their live performances, namely their passionate appearance on stage and their frontman’s vigorous, intense performance...
Their track “Breeze of Light” has been voted “Song of the Month” by influential music site Jumping Fish (www.jumpingfish.gr). Since then, “Breeze of Light” has gained airplay on all major pop/rock radio stations in Greece and Travel Mind Syndrome have attracted public interest with their video clip for “Breeze of Light”. As a result, the band’s following is growing steadily.

Raining Pleasure

Raining Pleasure is a four-piece band that hails from Patra, the biggest town in southern Greece. Having recorded their first demo in the early nineties, Raining Pleasure quickly became the Greek indie scene's best-kept secret.

Their debut album 'Memory Comes Back' (1996) was released for the respected indie label Lazy Dog and received enthusiastic reviews upon release as did it's follow up, 'Nostalgia', released in late 1998.

In Spring 2001 Raining Pleasure were linked with EMI. The band recorded and released an ep 'Capricorn', before returning to the studio to prepare their third full length album, their first for a major.

In December 2001 Raining Pleasure's major label debut 'Flood' was released to critical acclaim. The album spawned three massive airplay hits in Greece, the biggest of which 'Fake' has become a pop and rock radio staple, after successfully being used in TV spots for Greece's leading telecommunications company. 'Fake' was followed by the hits 'Capricorn' and 'Only Through You'. "Fake" was also used to the soundtrack of the film "The Best of Times" directed by the famous Taiwanese director Tso-chi Chang. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival 2002.

The buzz surrounding the group is fantastic and has taken many by surprise. In Rock N Roll Magazine 2002 readers' poll the group was voted best Greek rock act of all time, a humbling vote of confidence for an act that has been around for just over 5 years.

Raining Pleasure have been one of the hottest tickets across Greece for three summers running, having shared festival stages with The Cure, The Pixies, The Dandy Warhols and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club among others and having sold out theatres across the country.

Their major label debut album, 'Flood', performed exceptionally well on the charts, spending 15 weeks on the international chart where it peaked at No.1 before chart regulations necessitated the album's move to the local repertoire chart where it peaked at No.5 (an astonishing and unprecedented feat for a Greek act performing in English). The album spent well over a year on the Top 40 Artist Album Charts and has been certified Gold.

2004: The group's album 'Forwards & Backwards', is introduced by the double A-side single 'World'/'Identical Twins'. On 'Identical Twins' esteemed vocalist Elly Paspala contributes a vocal track of rare beauty. Both songs became airplay hits.

In March the band's cover of ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' featured in the successful Greek film 'Hardcore', began climbing the airplay charts where it will remain for over six months. In September the group scores another hit with album track 'Love Me, Love Me, Love Me' which video clip directed by Marina Gioti won the best animation video clip award at the Animation Block Party Awards 2005 in New York.

Winter 2004: The band embarks on its first tour of Germany and enters the studio to record a new version of the classic album by Manos Hadjidakis and the New York Rock N Roll Ensemble, 'Reflections'.

'Reflections' is released to immediate critical acclaim. The album was introduced to media at a concert at St Paul's Anglican Church in Athens.

Their latest album 'Who's gonna tell Juliet?' is released in December 2007 in Greece on their new indie label Celesta Records. It is a unique and unusual alternative pop record, described as a fervent guitar driven pop gem with strong melodies, smart lyrics and compelling vocals

Since the rehearsals saw progress, they soon attended their first live concerts. Their first demos were recorded in an old pub by the name “Fallen Angel” (that was soon turned into an illegal studio, in need of a place for rehearsing).
Electric Litany have created their very own characteristic sound, that is very difficult to define and settle under genres. Though the fans usually refer to their sound as experimental.Over these years the band has managed to build a kind of reputation around their name and have created a fan base of their own.
In July 2009, the band started working on their first studio album. Recordings took place in an abandoned church of 1895, that has a very good acoustic quality. They only lasted 3 days and all songs were performed live under recording phase.
Soon enough the value of Electric Litany was appreciated by label Inner Ear Records and signed the band. Their first effort ” How To Be A Child & Win The War ” was released by Inner Ear on February 1st, 2010.

2L8

2L8 is the project of K the Clown and a team of collaborators and musicians based in Thessaloniki, North Greece.

The 2L8 debut "Armed Angels, Frustrated Youth, the Art of Self-Deceit and Music Industry" (Poeta Negra Records, 2005) made a major impact on both critics and public in Greeece. Most reviews considered it as a "masterpiece" and described it as a document of contemporary musical expression, as the debut of the year! Post punk, pop, rock, hardcore, post rock and
at the same time nothing like that.

"HE & SHE, Angry Enough to Keep Loving in the Dark Ages" (Inner Ear Records, 2008) is 2L8's second release. All the songs in the album jump in a ritualistic way, without the insistence in a specific musical form, that means there is a balance between post-rock and minimalism. The bursts of guitars, the sharp stringed instruments, the gloomy atmosphere and the opera vocals introduce a fanciful and lyrical work. All these elements in combination with the fine-crafted production create an avant-garde piece of music.
